Real Madrid beat Atlético Madrid 4-2 on penalties after a tough Champions League match. The game ended 2-2 on aggregate after extra time. Antonio Rüdiger scored the winning penalty to send Madrid to the next round.

Atlético won the second leg 1-0. Conor Gallagher scored early to give them the lead. Madrid had a chance to score late, but Vinicius missed a penalty.

The penalty shootout was full of drama. Julián Álvarez slipped and touched the ball twice while taking his penalty. The referee ruled it out. Madrid’s goalkeeper Courtois told the referee he saw the double touch.

“I felt that he touched the ball twice and I told the referee. It was bad luck for them,” Courtois said. Jan Oblak saved a penalty from Lucas Vázquez, but Marcos Llorente hit the crossbar. This gave Rüdiger the chance to score the winning penalty, and he did not miss.

Madrid have beaten Atlético Madrid many times in the Champions League. They won the finals in 2014 and 2016 and have now knocked Atlético out again.

Madrid will play Arsenal in the quarterfinals. Borussia Dortmund and Aston Villa also reached the next round.
