Kohli’s Ranji Return: A Moment to Remember, An Inning to Forget

January 31, 2025

Virat Kohli’s long-awaited return to the Ranji Trophy after nearly 13 years was met with great excitement, but his time at the crease was short-lived. Representing Delhi, Kohli walked in to loud cheers but could only manage six(6) runs before being bowled by Railways pacer Himanshu Sangwan. His dismissal came after an aggressive boundary off the previous ball, as he attempted to play another attacking shot, only to see his off-stump rattled by a sharp inswinger. Despite the early exit, his presence alone ignited a special atmosphere at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

A Packed Stadium for Kohli’s Return

Despite the low score, Kohli’s presence created an electrifying atmosphere at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. On the opening day of the match, an astonishing 15,000-plus fans filled the stands, eager to witness the cricketing icon in action. The excitement carried over to day two, with thousands lining up as early as 6 AM outside the stadium. In anticipation of even larger crowds, the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) ensured extra security and opened all gates from 8 AM to facilitate smooth entry for the fans.

Upendra Yadav Shines as Railways Takes Charge

While Kohli’s innings was short-lived, Railways’ batter Upendra Yadav stole the show on the first day. He played a composed and gritty knock, scoring 95 runs off 177 balls, helping his team post a competitive total. Earlier, Delhi had won the toss and opted to bowl, hoping to make early inroads into the Railways batting lineup.

Although Kohli’s return to domestic cricket did not go as expected, his presence alone added immense value to the tournament, drawing fans in large numbers. With more matches to come, cricket lovers will be hoping for a classic Kohli masterclass in the games ahead.
