Yash Raj Films just unveiled the explosive teaser for War 2, and as expected, it came packed with all the trademarks of a Bollywood blockbuster — heart-pounding action, intense stares, sculpted physiques, dramatic slow-motion shots, and Hrithik Roshan back in peak HRX mode. But what really got people talking wasn’t the slick action or even the star power. It was the date.
Right at the start, the teaser boldly announces: “This Independence Day.” Moments later, the release date appears — 14th August. That’s right. Not 15th, India’s actual Independence Day, but the 14th — which happens to be Pakistan’s.
What Else Was in the Teaser?
The controversy has sadly overshadowed what was otherwise an adrenaline-pumping teaser. Hrithik Roshan returns as Kabir, the sharp and brooding super-spy from the original War (2019). Fans also caught a glimpse of Kiara Advani in a brief but dazzling appearance, and the buzz around Jr NTR’s face-off with Hrithik is already huge.
Of course, some viewers couldn’t help but mention the absence of Tiger Shroff, who was a fan favorite in the first film. But between the new star cast and Ayan Mukerji at the helm as director, expectations are sky-high.
The Internet Has Questions
The confusion was immediate, and the backlash even faster. Social media erupted with criticism and mockery. One user summed up the core issue:
“Ye 14 August ko kiska Independence Day hai??? 🤔”
Another went further, saying,
“First they ignore Indian soldiers’ bravery, and now they’re calling Pakistan’s Independence Day ours? Wow, Bollywood never disappoints — in the worst ways.”
The comments kept rolling in:
- “Releasing on 14th August and calling it Independence Day? Whose country are you talking about?”
- “Bollywood and its never-ending obsession with Pakistan.”
- “This Independence Day bolke 14th August ko release kar rahe hain movie, koi inhe batao India hai, Pakistan nahi.”
- “Details matter, @hrithikroshan — especially when you’re waving the patriotism flag.”
The sentiment was loud and clear: releasing a film with patriotic overtones on the day your neighboring country celebrates its freedom, while calling it “this Independence Day,” is bound to raise eyebrows — and tempers.
About the Film
War 2 marks the sixth chapter in the expanding YRF Spy Universe and is produced by Aditya Chopra. With the Roshan–NTR face-off being teased as a high-stakes showdown, the film is clearly aiming for next-level scale and spectacle.
But right now, the spotlight is stuck on one misstep — or perhaps a calculated move.
Marketing Strategy or Miscalculation?
So was this a simple oversight? A bold marketing gimmick? Or just a poorly thought-out detail that slipped through the cracks? Whatever the case, it’s sparked exactly the kind of online firestorm that studios often both dread and secretly crave.
If the goal was to get people talking — mission accomplished. But when you’re making a film soaked in patriotism, even a one-day error in release date can feel like waving the wrong flag.
