Whatsapp(Meta), the company owned by Mark Zuckerberg, has banned more than 9.7 million WhatsApp accounts in India. The company took this action to enforce WhatsApp’s usage rules and prevent violations.

Why Did WhatsApp Ban These Accounts?

According to WhatsApp’s February 2025 Security Report, the company blocked these accounts because they were violating its guidelines. Among these, 1.4 million accounts were banned without receiving any user complaints.

How AI Helped WhatsApp Detect Violations

WhatsApp has invested in AI-powered moderation tools and advanced reporting systems to detect and remove suspicious accounts. A company spokesperson stated that WhatsApp has been working on artificial intelligence for years to ensure the platform remains safe for all users.

WhatsApp’s Efforts to Improve Security

The company emphasized that its data scientists and security experts are continuously working to improve user safety. WhatsApp aims to prevent any misuse of its platform that could harm users.

Action Taken Under IT Rules 2021

WhatsApp stated that most banned accounts were reported by users themselves. The company follows India’s IT Rules 2021, which require platforms to take action against accounts involved in suspicious activities. WhatsApp also has an automated detection system to identify and block suspicious behavior.

Common Complaints Leading to Account Bans

Many of the reported cases involved spam messages and third-party apps. Additionally, some users complained about being added to groups without their permission. After reviewing these complaints, WhatsApp decided to ban the violating accounts.
