Why Was a Part of the Gwarko Flyover Demolished Before Completion

A part of the ‘Gwarko Flyover’ in Lalitpur, which was in its final stage of construction, has been demolished.

According to Ramhari Pokharel, Director General of the Department of Roads, the demolition was ordered after an inspection found that some sections did not meet the required standards.

“We found that some precast panels did not meet the standards, so we asked the construction company to remove them,” he said. “The company will rebuild them following the proper standards.”

Even with the reconstruction, the company must complete the project within the given time frame. The Department of Roads reported that when the construction began by building walls and filling them with soil, the walls started to crack and collapse.

Due to this, the wall on the Satdobato side had to be demolished. Pokharel mentioned that about 30 to 40 meters of the wall would need to be rebuilt.

The flyover, which has faced multiple delays, is now more than 80% complete. The construction deadline had already expired in the Nepali month of Mangsir (November/December).

Since then, the construction company has continued the work by paying fines. Initially, they estimated finishing the work by Chaitra (March/April). However, with the need for reconstruction, the deadline is expected to be extended further.

The original deadline for this project was Falgun 2080 (February/March 2024). The flyover is being built by Ashish/Samanantar/Religare JV. Previously, the construction company had even halted work for some time, citing difficulties caused by repeated quality tests by the Department of Roads’ Quality, Research, and Development Center.

The flyover is being constructed under the ‘Engineering, Procurement, and Construction’ (EPC) model, which includes both design and construction.
