An incident involving the death of an 80-year-old man due to a dispute among family members over WiFi has come to light. The incident occurred in Pokhariya Municipality of Parsa district. The deceased has been identified as 80-year-old Ramjan Dewan, a resident of Jagatpur in Ward No. 8 of the municipality.
Accused in the case, 20-year-old grandson Azad Dewan, also known as Kabul, and 18-year-old granddaughter Khushbu Khatun, have been arrested on charges of assaulting their grandfather to a life-threatening extent. The accused siblings are currently in the custody of the Area Police Office, Pokhariya. Police have obtained a three-day remand from the District Court to continue their investigation into the homicide. Both Azad and Khushbu are the children of Roz Dewan.
The body of the deceased, Ramjan, has been sent to Narayani Hospital in Birgunj for a post-mortem examination, and the results are yet to be released. According to Inspector Swaroop Sharma, the incident occurred around 4 PM on Monday. Following the altercation, Ramjan’s condition worsened, and he was admitted to Narayani Hospital for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Upon receiving information about the incident from the hospital’s police unit, a police team from the Area Police Office, Pokhariya, apprehended the accused siblings around 11 PM on Monday night. Following the incident, the deceased’s wife, Khadija Khatun, filed a complaint with the police.
Inspector Sharma revealed that the deceased Ramjan’s house is adjacent to his daughter Dai Khatun’s house. The dispute started after the WiFi line in Ramjan’s house was disconnected. The accused Azad and Khushbu had alleged that their WiFi password was being misused by their aunt Dai Khatun’s family. In response, they disconnected the WiFi line at their home.
Azad and Khushbu informed their mother, Rabja Khatun, about the alleged misuse of the WiFi password, after which Rabja reportedly began verbally abusing others without naming anyone directly. This led to a heated exchange between Rabja and her sister-in-law Dai Khatun. Seeing the argument escalate, Ramjan intervened to defuse the situation, but he was allegedly attacked by his grandchildren, rendering him unconscious, as stated in the complaint filed by his wife, Khadija.
Inspector Sharma stated that a detailed and serious investigation is underway following the complaint. He added that since the deceased, the complainant, and the accused are all from the same family, there have been attempts by the family to resolve the issue privately without pursuing legal action.
“However, a death cannot be treated as a personal or family matter to be resolved internally,” he said. “We are in the process of investigation and will await the post-mortem report before making any conclusions.”
