97 Nepalis on Interpol Watchlist: Nepal Police

A total of 97 Nepalis are on the watchlist of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), with 72 individuals issued Red Notices and 25 individuals under Diffusion Notices. Nepal Police has stated that five foreigners in Nepal are under Red Notices and 11 under Diffusion Notices for ongoing investigations.

According to police records, 66 individuals have been extradited to Nepal via Interpol in the past 10 years. The highest number, 25, were brought back from the UAE with Interpol’s assistance, followed by 10 from Qatar, 5 from Kuwait, 3 each from Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, and 2 each from India, Macau, China, and Cambodia. Additionally, one person each was extradited from the USA, Portugal, Bahrain, Romania, and the UK.

Of the 66 individuals extradited since 2015, 53 were under Red Notices, while 13 were under Diffusion Notices. Among them, the highest number of arrests were related to murder charges (15), followed by rape (9), gold smuggling (8), fraud (7), human trafficking (6), and 5 each for kidnapping, cybercrime, and foreign employment scams. Two arrests each were made for wildlife crimes, corporate fraud, and banking fraud.

During the same period, seven foreign nationals were apprehended in Nepal and handed over to their respective countries. Among them, 4 were Chinese, and one each was from Sweden, Korea, and India. Diffusion Notices are issued to determine the location of suspects in cases under court proceedings, and if their whereabouts are discovered, Red Notices are issued for arrests. Interpol, with 196 member countries, facilitates international criminal searches, including Nepal.

The highest number of foreign nationals on Interpol’s watchlist in Nepal are Indian citizens. Of the six being tracked, four Indians are under Red Notices and two under Diffusion Notices. One individual involved in drug smuggling has a Red Notice, while two involved in serious crimes like kidnapping and murder have been under Diffusion Notices for eight years.

Additionally, one person involved in sexual offenses and two in murder cases are being sought under Red Notices. A Korean national involved in the illegal trade of protected wildlife is also on the Red Notice list. The longest-wanted criminal by Interpol is a Pakistani national accused of counterfeit currency operations. He has been under a Diffusion Notice since 2011. Similarly, two Romanian nationals wanted for banking fraud are under Diffusion Notices, while six Chinese nationals involved in gold smuggling are also on Interpol’s wanted list.
