A military aircraft crashed near Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, killing at least 10 people, including crew members, military officials, and civilians.
The Antonov aircraft went down about 22 kilometers north of Khartoum while on a military mission carrying senior army officers. The crash occurred in a densely populated area, resulting in the deaths of at least five civilians. The wreckage of the aircraft landed on residential buildings, causing significant damage.
Local volunteer groups reported that 10 bodies were recovered from the site, and several severely burned victims were taken to the hospital. Survivors suffered serious injuries.
The cause of the crash remains unclear, though China’s Xinhua News Agency cited technical failure as a possible reason. Witnesses stated that the aircraft was flying at a low altitude before suddenly descending and catching fire.
The incident further deepens the crisis in Sudan, which has been engulfed in civil war since April 2023. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has resulted in more than 29,600 deaths and displaced over 15 million people, according to the International Organization for Migration.
