Nvidia Won’t Use Hopper for Its Next China Chip, CEO Confirms

Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang has confirmed that the company will not create another chip from the Hopper series for China. The current H20 chip, built under the Hopper architecture, is the last of its kind for the Chinese market due to U.S. restrictions.

Huang said, “It’s not Hopper because it’s not possible to modify Hopper anymore,” while speaking in a livestream shared by Taiwan’s Formosa TV. The company is now exploring new ways to meet China’s needs without violating U.S. export rules.

US Export Rules Impact Nvidia’s China Strategy

The U.S. recently limited sales of Nvidia’s AI chips, including the H20, to China. As a result, Nvidia is working on a downgraded version of the H20 chip to stay active in the Chinese market. This chip is expected to launch within the next two months.

Nvidia’s Strong Business in China

China is a major market for Nvidia. It brought in $17 billion in revenue in the fiscal year ending January 26, which was about 13% of the company’s total earnings. Despite rising competition from Chinese firms like Huawei, Nvidia wants to maintain its position in the region.

Huang Criticizes Export Policy

Jensen Huang believes past U.S. rules on AI chip exports were misguided. He said the focus should have been on expanding American tech influence globally, not limiting it. Former President Donald Trump has also promised to cancel these export controls if re-elected.

Looking Ahead

As Nvidia moves away from the Hopper series for China, it will likely introduce a new chip line that meets U.S. rules while keeping up with AI demand in China. The company’s next steps will be closely watched in both tech and trade circles.
