Honey Trap to Blackmail How a Relationship Turned Into a Huge Scam

A woman from Gorkha, Tara Gurung, has been in police custody for almost a month. She faces serious charges of honey trapping and blackmail, with the case currently in court in Lalitpur.

Tara, 33, was arrested on April 3. Police investigated her for extortion and filed a case demanding over 92 million Nepali rupees in compensation, plus prison time and fines. She is accused of trapping a businessman from Puthan, who lives in Lalitpur, in a honey trap that started about three and a half years ago.

The two met at a traditional music event in Kathmandu in December 2021 and became friends on social media. According to the victim, their relationship grew closer and eventually turned physical. After that, Tara allegedly started blackmailing him, threatening to go public or report him to the police if he didn’t pay.

The victim says he gave Tara nearly 50 million rupees through bank transfers and cash, plus expensive gifts including multiple iPhones, jewelry, and even land worth 20 million rupees registered in her name. The total loss he claims is about 92 million rupees.

Despite paying large sums, Tara allegedly kept demanding more money, which led the victim to file a police complaint in March 2025.

Tara denies the accusations, saying they were in a live-in relationship and she never blackmailed him. She claims the money and gifts were voluntary, given as presents during their travels together.

The police found videos and photos sent by Tara threatening suicide if the relationship ended, but she says those were attempts to save their relationship, not blackmail.

The court is now deciding whether to keep Tara in jail or release her on bail while the trial continues.

This case reveals how personal relationships can turn into serious legal battles, mixing love, trust, and crime.
