Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to six months in jail by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on charges of contempt of court, according to Dhaka Tribune.
The verdict was delivered on Wednesday by a three-member bench headed by Justice MD Golam Mortuza Mojumdar. Alongside Hasina, Shaqil Akand Bulbul of Gaibandha’s Govindaganj has also been sentenced to two months in the same case.
Hasina, also a former Awami League leader, resigned from her post and left the country 11 months ago. In June 2025, the ICT formally charged her with crimes against humanity.
Prosecutors allege that Hasina played a key role in ordering mass killings during the nationwide uprising in July 2024. According to the charge sheet submitted by lead prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam and his team, she was a principal planner behind the violent crackdowns in July and August of that year.
On August 5, 2024, Hasina resigned as prime minister and left her Dhaka residence for India. Her departure came amid massive street protests and curfew defiance by thousands of demonstrators.
