Nepal Police has arrested 52 individuals, including six Chinese nationals, for operating illegal dating app scams and cryptocurrency businesses. The arrests were made during a raid by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) in Lalitpur Metropolitan City–4, Damkal Chowk.
Fake software company used as cover
According to the police, the group had rented a house and registered a company named “Social Software Development Company.” Under this company, they were running an unauthorized call center and managing the “MeToo” dating app illegally.
Operations expanded to Kathmandu
A branch of this operation was also found in Kathmandu Metropolitan City–13, Chagal. There, several Nepali women were allegedly lured into working for the group, which was involved in online dating scams and crypto trading fraud.
Items and cash seized
From the raid, police seized:
- NPR 1,399,950 in undisclosed cash
- 7 laptops
- 54 mobile phones
Charges and ongoing investigation
Police have filed cybercrime charges against the six Chinese nationals under digital currency laws. Investigations are also ongoing for the remaining 46 individuals to determine their level of involvement.
