A landslide triggered by continuous rainfall has blocked the Jure section of the Araniko Highway, one of Nepal’s key routes connecting to the Chinese border.
Landslide with Mudflow Causes Obstruction
According to Rameshwar Karki, Chief of the District Police Office in Sindhupalchok, the highway has remained blocked since Saturday night after a mudslide occurred above the previous landslide site.
Heavy rain caused soil and debris to slide down the slopes, making the road completely impassable.
Rescue and Road Clearance Underway
Authorities are currently using excavators and loaders to clear the debris. However, traffic is still halted in both directions, with heavy vehicles and containers stranded along the highway.
Electricity Poles and Road Damage Reported
In addition to the roadblock, an electricity pole has collapsed in Jure, disrupting power in the area.
Meanwhile, the road at Mahabhir has reportedly collapsed, increasing the risk for travelers. Despite the danger, motorcyclists are taking risks to cross the damaged section.
Border Area Traffic Disrupted
Local residents in Tatopani, Tripurasundari Rural Municipality, and Bahrabise Municipality have been directly affected by the landslide.
Containers transporting goods to and from the Tatopani border checkpoint have also been stopped due to the road closure.
