After a long pause, popular Nepali band Nepathya has once again brought the soulful sounds and stories of Karnali to the stage. Their latest song ‘Karnalika Chaila’ was officially released this Saturday in Kathmandu, blending folk essence with a fresh musical identity.
A Song Born from Two Decades of Journey
The journey of this song began over 20 years ago when singer Amrit Gurung first discovered its melody. Since then, he continued to revisit the Karnali region, deeply inspired by the voices and stories of the people. This long commitment has now turned into a full-fledged musical creation.
Rooted in Folk, Refined with Style
The song is based on the traditional ‘Tappa’ tune, commonly heard in districts like Salyan. A similar melody can be found in the old Nepali movie ‘Maitighar’, in the hit song ‘Kaala Kurtaile Chha Maile Jagirai Khayun’.
Amrit didn’t just imitate the tune—he held onto its roots while evolving it in his own unique style. The song reflects years of musical exploration, including rural jam sessions and research visits to Karnali.
From a Documentary to a Music Video
Though the song is newly released, many fans already knew about it. It was mentioned in the documentary ‘Bhedako Oon Jasto’, where both Amrit Gurung and journalist Narayan Wagle were seen humming its lines years ago. That clip was also shown during the launch event.
Bhusan Dahal Directs the Music Video
The music video, directed by veteran creator Bhusan Dahal, adds a powerful visual layer to the song. It brings alive the essence of Karnali—the land, the people, and their emotions.
First Access Through Paid Viewing
For now, the video is available on Nepathya’s official website through a paid gateway. Nepali viewers can watch it by paying a minimum of Rs. 10, and international viewers need to pay at least $1.
According to Kiran Krishna Shrestha of Nepalaya, the aim is to give true supporters of the band a chance to enjoy and support their work. He added that those who wish to contribute more are welcome.
Free Release Coming Soon on YouTube
The music video will be made free to the public seven days after the launch. Since the band is flying to the U.S. for their next musical tour, the YouTube release will be timed during that journey.
