Arniko Highway, the key road connecting Nepal and China, has been blocked after a section of the road collapsed at Kodari-Koplang in Sindhupalchok.
The incident happened late at night on 1st Asar (June 15) due to continuous rainfall. According to Inspector Jagat Bahadur Rai of the Kodari Police Office, the road gave way around 9 PM, completely disrupting the highway.
Authorities from the Road Department, local municipality, and private contractors are working together to reopen the road. Excavators and tipper trucks have been mobilized, but due to the severity of the collapse, it may take the entire day to clear the debris and restore movement.
Bhote Koshi Rural Municipality Chairperson Pasang Nurpu Sherpa confirmed that 60 to 70 feet of the road was affected, and part of it has slid close to the riverbank. Until the area is filled with soil and stabilized, vehicles cannot pass safely.
The road had already been weakened by previous earthquakes, and this new collapse has caused complete disruption of container transport through the Tatopani border point, forcing the checkpoint to shut down.
