Kedar Bahadur Basnet, a resident of Kathmandu originally from Biratnagar Metropolitan City–11, has filed a lawsuit at Morang District Court after learning that his elder brother Bharat Bahadur Basnet had falsely declared him dead to claim ancestral property. According to Kedar, Bharat—along with local officials—created forged documents in 2058 BS stating that Kedar had died, which enabled Bharat to claim and sell a portion of family land in Sunsari worth Rs 72 lakh. Kedar only discovered the fraud after the land was sold and initiated legal action accusing his brother and 10 others, including ward chair Kumar Pokhrel and former secretary Suryabahadur Thapa, of fraud and property misuse. The case is currently under review in court.
