OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed AI company, has added new features to its ChatGPT app for Mac. These updates allow ChatGPT to work with different third-party apps, including tools like Apple Notes, Notion, and developer software such as Android Studio and PyCharm.
With the new update, ChatGPT can now understand the content displayed on the screen from these apps. This means it can provide responses based on the information from apps without needing users to copy and paste anything. For example, during a demo, ChatGPT was able to pull information from the Warp app to generate commands.
Developers now also have special modes (o1 and o1 Pro) for coding.
Some of the apps ChatGPT can now interact with include:
- IDEs (Integrated Development Environments): BBEdit, MatLab, Nova, Script Editor, TextMate, and more
- VS Code variations: VSCode Insiders, VSCodium, Cursor, and WindSurf
- JetBrains IDEs: Android Studio, IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, RubyMine, and others
- Terminal apps: Prompt and Warp
- Productivity apps: Apple Notes, Notion, and Quip
The update adds a “Work with Apps” button below the text box in the ChatGPT Mac app. Clicking this button lets users choose an app they’re using, allowing ChatGPT to pull context from that app to give better answers. ChatGPT only accesses information from the app the user selects and won’t pull data unless the user allows it.
Currently, this feature is available in the beta version of the ChatGPT Mac app for paid users (Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu). OpenAI plans to extend it to Windows and free-tier users next year.
