Cyclone Alfred is now moving toward the southeast coast of Queensland, prompting warnings for millions of residents. The storm is expected to bring huge waves, heavy rainfall of up to 700mm in some areas, and strong, destructive winds.

The cyclone intensified to a Category 2 system overnight and made a sudden U-turn about 600km off Brisbane. It is now heading straight for the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast areas, with landfall expected on Thursday.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned about a 500km stretch from Double Island Point in Queensland to Yamba in New South Wales. This alert covers major cities and towns, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Byron Bay, and Ballina. Authorities are urging people in these areas to prepare for severe weather conditions.
