A tragic fire at a retirement home on the outskirts of Belgrade, Serbia, early Monday morning claimed the lives of eight people and left seven others injured.

The fire broke out around 3:30 am local time, with approximately 30 residents inside the facility, according to Luka Kausik, a police officer overseeing emergency response efforts.

Serbian Labor Minister Nemanja Starovic stated that firefighters acted swiftly, rescuing 13 people from the burning building. “Unfortunately, eight lives were lost in the fire. The fire services responded immediately upon receiving the alert and did everything they could to prevent further casualties,” he told local media.

The injured individuals are receiving treatment at the Belgrade Military Hospital. While firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze quickly, Kausik noted that accessing the area posed challenges due to its remote location.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, and efforts are underway to ensure the safety and well-being of the other residents of the facility.
