Google Maps has renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” for users in the United States. This update reflects a formal decision by the Trump administration to change the name of the body of water between Mexico’s east coast and Florida’s Panhandle.
The new name appears on both web and mobile versions of Google Maps and follows the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), a U.S. database of official location names. Users in Mexico and international users will still see “Gulf of Mexico,” though American users will see “Gulf of America.”
Other mapping services, like Apple Maps and Waze, have yet to adopt the new name. Apple Maps still redirects searches for “Gulf of America” to “Gulf of Mexico,” while Waze shows both names in search results but does not recognize searches for “Gulf of America.”
