Government Urges Social Media Platforms to Register in Nepal

The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has once again urged social media platforms to register in Nepal.

In an effort to regulate social media usage, the ministry published a notice for the second time on Monday, requesting platforms to undergo registration.

According to the notice issued by the ministry on Monday, individuals, companies, or organizations wishing to operate social media platforms must register with the ministry and designate a contact person.

Previously, the government had repeatedly urged social media platforms such as Facebook, X, TikTok, LinkedIn, and others to comply with the provisions of the “Guidelines for Regulating the Use of Social Media, 2080.”

The ministry’s notice includes provisions related to the registration, regulation, and monitoring of social media platforms. According to the ministry, “this step will enhance the responsibility of online platforms and help create a safer and more dignified digital space.”

The guidelines require social media platforms to register before providing services in Nepal, ensure the monitoring and removal of objectionable content, and give special attention to user privacy and data security.

The ministry has stated that it will coordinate with relevant bodies for the implementation of these guidelines.

The government-issued guidelines also mandate social media companies to establish a contact office in Nepal, appoint a resident grievance officer, and designate an authority responsible for overseeing self-regulation compliance.
