A top official from Hockey India (HI) has confirmed that the country will strictly follow government orders regarding Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming Asia Cup Hockey tournament. This decision comes amidst heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives.
The Asia Cup, a major hockey tournament and qualifier for the 2026 FIH Men’s World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium, is scheduled to take place in Rajgir, Bihar from August 27 to September 7, 2025.
Hockey India: “Nation Comes First”
Hockey India’s Secretary General Bholanath Singh, who also serves as Vice-President of the Asian Hockey Federation, made the federation’s stance clear.
“Whatever the government decides, we will abide by it. We haven’t had discussions with them yet, but for us, the nation comes first,” Singh said.
He further added,
“I may hold different posts in the sport, but first I am an Indian citizen. The country’s honour is more important than any tournament.”
Pakistan Requests Visa Guarantee
Just two days ago, a senior official from the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) confirmed that they had reached out to the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF), requesting visa assurances for their players and officials.
However, given the recent military conflict and diplomatic strain, there is still serious doubt over Pakistan’s participation in the tournament.
Background: Conflict and Ceasefire
The political tension between the two nations escalated after the Pahalgam terror attack, leading to cross-border hostilities and even affecting sports. The IPL was briefly suspended during the unrest, highlighting the broader impact on sporting events.
Following several days of conflict, both sides agreed to a ceasefire, but the situation remains sensitive, especially concerning upcoming international events.
What’s Next?
All eyes are now on the Indian government’s decision. While sports usually aim to bring nations together, political realities may influence who gets to participate in the Asia Cup 2025.
For now, the Asia Cup preparations continue in Rajgir, but the final lineup of teams—especially Pakistan—remains uncertain.
