Instagram is reportedly planning to launch a standalone app for Reels, its short-video feature. This move comes as TikTok faces an uncertain future in the United States due to ongoing legal and regulatory challenges.
According to a report by The Information, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri recently informed employees about the potential development. However, Meta, Instagram’s parent company, has not made any official announcement regarding the new app.
The uncertainty surrounding TikTok is due to US government regulations requiring the platform to comply with local laws. If TikTok fails to meet these requirements, it may be forced to sell its US operations to a local company or face a ban.
By launching a separate Reels app, Instagram aims to strengthen its presence in the short-video market, providing an alternative to TikTok. If this plan moves forward, the new app could compete directly with TikTok, attracting more users and content creators.
Meta has yet to confirm when or if the standalone Reels app will be officially released. However, with TikTok’s future in question, Instagram appears to be preparing for a possible shift in the social media landscape.
