Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are officially out of the IPL 2025 playoff race after facing a 4-wicket defeat against Punjab Kings on Wednesday. This was CSK’s 8th loss in 10 matches, leaving them at the bottom of the points table with just 4 points.
Punjab Chase Down 191-Run Target in Thriller
Chasing 191 runs, Punjab Kings reached the target in 19.4 overs, losing 6 wickets along the way. Captain Shreyas Iyer led the chase with a crucial 72-run knock, guiding his team close to victory.
Opener Prabhsimran Singh contributed a solid 54 runs, while Priyansh Arya and Shashank Singh added 23 runs each. For Chennai, Matheesha Pathirana and Khaleel Ahmed picked 2 wickets each. Noor Ahmad and Ravindra Jadeja got one apiece.
CSK Collapse After Strong Start With the Bat
Earlier, CSK were invited to bat first after losing the toss. They posted 190 runs in 19.2 overs but fell short of crossing the 200 mark due to a late collapse. At one stage, Chennai looked strong at 48-3 with Sam Curran and Dewald Brevis building a solid partnership.
Curran top-scored with 88 runs, while Brevis added 32. Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with 17 runs.
Chahal’s Hat-trick Breaks CSK’s Momentum
In the 18th over, Sam Curran was dismissed, and soon after, MS Dhoni hit a four and a six before being caught off Yuzvendra Chahal. Chahal then stunned Chennai with a hat-trick, finishing with 4 wickets for 29 runs in 4 overs.
Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen took 2 wickets each, while Harpreet Brar and Azmatullah Omarzai claimed one each.
Punjab Move to Second, CSK at the Bottom
With this win, Punjab now have 13 points from 10 matches and have climbed to second place on the points table. Meanwhile, CSK remain at the bottom with just 4 points and no chance of qualifying for the playoffs in IPL 2025.
