The President of Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal, Kamal Thapa, condemned the vandalism and arson that took place during the royalist protest.
In a statement on social media on Thursday afternoon, Thapa said that the angry crowd, provoked by the police’s actions, resorted to vandalism and arson.
“The situation became chaotic when the police entered private homes in Tinkune and fired tear gas before the rally and speech even began,” he said. “The vandalism and arson at the offices of the CPN Unified Socialist Party, the Ministry of Home Affairs, private homes, supermarkets, and government offices are condemnable.”
Thapa, a former home minister, also criticized the government for suppressing the protest.
“We strongly condemn the government’s actions during the protest held in Kathmandu today, which was aimed at liberation from a corrupt system and the restoration of a Hindu nation and monarchy,” he said. “The unpleasant events during the protest are regrettable. We are shocked to hear that Sabin Maharjan from Kirtipur was martyred after being shot by the police. We also mourn the death of photojournalist Suresh Rajak from Avenues Television, who died in the fire at the building in Tinkune. No amount of condemnation is enough for these incidents.”
