Karan confessed that he feels happy when films such as Stree 2 and Alia Bhattโ€™s Gangubai Kathiawadi work well at the box office.

Filmmaker Karan Johar recently emphasized the growing importance of understanding gender representation in films. In a recent interview, he highlighted that female-led movies are now consistently outshining male-led films at the box office, a trend that can no longer be ignored. He mentioned that he feels proud when films like Stree 2 and Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt, perform well commercially.

In a conversation on Lilly Singhโ€™s podcast, Karan was asked about the significance of being sensitive to gender politics in cinema. He explained, โ€œCinema is meant to entertain and offer a visual spectacle, but itโ€™s important to avoid promoting incorrect gender politics or social norms. A movie can be successful without spreading harmful messages. While no external censorship can fix this, filmmakers must practice self-censorship. A film may become a hit, but if it communicates the wrong message, is that really a win?”

Karan was particularly pleased with Alia Bhattโ€™s Gangubai Kathiawadi, calling it a major achievement. He said, โ€œAliaโ€™s performance in Gangubai was driven entirely by her talent, and it opened to much bigger numbers than many films led by male stars. This is a huge sign that women can lead films just as successfully.โ€ He also pointed out that while male actors often claim they should be paid more due to their box office pull, we’re now seeing women-led movies doing better than some big male stars’ films, which is a significant shift.

As for what’s next for Karan, he’s currently working on his upcoming project Nadaaniyan, which will mark the debut of Saif Ali Khanโ€™s son, Ibrahim Ali Khan, in the film industry. Ibrahim will star opposite Khushi Kapoor in the movie, set for a Netflix release. Nadaaniyan will also be the directorial debut of Shauna Gautam, who worked as an assistant director on Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani.

Karanโ€™s latest production, Jigra, which he co-produced with Alia Bhatt and featured her in the lead role, unfortunately didnโ€™t perform well at the box office.
