Former Real Madrid star Marcelo has officially retired from professional football at the age of 36. The Brazilian left-back, widely regarded as one of the greatest in his position, made the announcement on Thursday, February 6.
Marcelo enjoyed a remarkable 15-year spell with the Spanish giants, making 546 appearances and contributing 38 goals and 103 assists. His time at Real Madrid was filled with silverware, winning six La Liga titles, five UEFA Champions League trophies, four FIFA Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, and two Copa del Reys.
Reflecting on his decision, Marcelo shared an emotional message:
“At 18, Real Madrid opened its doors to me. Now, I can proudly call myself a true Madrileno. Sixteen seasons, 25 titles, five Champions Leagues, and unforgettable nights at the Bernabeu – what a journey! My playing career ends here, but I still have much to give to football. Thank you for everything.”
From Fluminense to Madrid Glory
Marcelo’s journey began at Fluminense before Real Madrid secured his signature in 2007 for a reported €6.5 million. He quickly established himself as a key player, helping the club secure 25 major trophies. In 2021, he made history as the first non-Spanish player in 117 years to captain the club.
A Tribute from Real Madrid President
Real Madrid President Florentino Perez paid tribute to the club legend, stating:
“Marcelo is one of the greatest left-backs in Real Madrid and world football history. We had the privilege of watching him for a long time, and Real Madrid will always be his home.”
Marcelo played a crucial role in some of the club’s most historic triumphs, including La Decima in Lisbon and La Decimocuarta in Paris.
Final Years and Retirement
After leaving Madrid in 2022, Marcelo had a brief stint with Olympiacos before returning to Fluminense in 2023. He led the team to Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana victories before deciding to retire.
Marcelo’s legacy in football is undeniable, and while his playing days may be over, his influence on the game will continue.
