Melamchi Thapathali water pipe burst

This morning, a Melamchi drinking water pipe burst in Thapathali. The pipe broke at the turn from Thapathali Chowk towards Norvic Hospital.

When the pipe burst, high-pressure water gushed out, damaging the road. The sidewalk was also affected, and the street is now covered in mud, stones, and gravel.

The water has entered nearby shops and restaurants. The area has many restaurants, medical stores, and fruit shops. Some shops and restaurants are flooded, and the ground floors of houses are underwater.

The pipe burst around 5 AM. As soon as the problem was noticed, workers from Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Limited (KUKL) shut off the valve, preventing major damage.

Similar Incident in the Past

Earlier, on Magh 30 (February 12), another Melamchi water pipe burst in Bijulibazar–Babarmahal. At that time, government offices, including the Forest Office, were flooded, and court hearings had to be postponed.

In Babarmahal, the Nepal Electricity Authority installed underground electric wires, damaging the Melamchi pipe. The pipe was repaired the next day.

The reason for today’s pipe burst in Thapathali is still unknown. Officials from Melamchi and KUKL have not yet responded.
