Earthquake Memorial Day

Today, Nepal observes the 10th Earthquake Memorial Day, remembering the devastating April 25, 2015 (Baisakh 12, 2072 BS) earthquake that claimed thousands of lives and left a lasting impact on the nation. The 7.6 magnitude quake, with its epicenter in Barpak, Gorkha, killed 8,979 people and injured 22,309 others, causing widespread destruction across central Nepal.

Various programs are being held nationwide to honor the memory of the victims and raise awareness about disaster preparedness. The central event is taking place at the historic Dharahara premises in Sundhara, Kathmandu, with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli attending as the chief guest. The event is organized under the theme “Let’s Build Safe Infrastructure, Let’s Stay Safe from Earthquakes,” emphasizing the urgent need for resilient urban planning and construction practices.

Supported by organizations such as Hope IVF and Sunrise Bank, the commemoration aims to promote public awareness about earthquake safety and preparedness. As seismic activity continues to affect western Nepal—highlighted by recent tremors, including a 4.2-magnitude earthquake in eastern Rukum just last evening—experts stress the importance of continued vigilance and investment in earthquake-resistant infrastructure.

A decade since the tragedy, Earthquake Memorial Day serves not only as a moment of reflection but also as a reminder of the collective responsibility to build a safer and more resilient Nepal.
