The Ninth Jedi Returns: Star Wars Visions Spinoff Announced at Celebration Japan

At Star Wars Celebration Japan, fans were treated to thrilling news during the Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 panel. Lucasfilm’s James Waugh took the stage to reveal that the upcoming collection of Visions shorts will premiere on October 29, 2025—but that wasn’t the only surprise.

Waugh was joined by Kenji Kamiyama, the writer and director behind the fan-favorite short The Ninth Jedi from Visions Volume 1. Kamiyama expressed his gratitude for the continued love and support for the characters Kara and Juro, who will also feature in the new Volume 3 short, Child of Hope. Then came the big announcement: an all-new spinoff series titled Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi is officially in the works.

“This new series will carry Kara’s journey forward,” Kamiyama shared, referencing the conclusion of Child of Hope, which sees Kara setting off in search of her father—picking up from where The Ninth Jedi left off.

A standout element of Kamiyama’s original story was the unique concept of lightsabers that shift color based on the wielder’s connection to the Force. According to Kamiyama, this mysterious technology was created by Kara’s father, who has since been abducted—a central thread in the new series.

“What was the true purpose behind such lightsabers?” Kamiyama teased. “This story will begin to unravel those secrets.”

While Kamiyama won’t be directing the new spinoff, he will return in a key creative role, serving as supervising director on Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi, helping bring Kara’s next chapter to life.
