Speaking at the 8th Chamber Expo on Thursday, Minister Gurung explained that this policy would be an important step in advancing AI technology in Nepal. He also stated that, in addition to the policy, the government would work on drafting a law related to AI to ensure its proper regulation and development. Gurung highlighted that Nepal is currently behind other South Asian countries when it comes to AI technology. “Nepal is the farthest behind in AI in South Asia,” he said, stressing that the government is committed to catching up. He assured the audience that the policy would be finalized this year, and after that, they would begin working on creating the law.

Furthermore, Gurung shared his vision for advancing AI research in Nepal. He revealed plans to establish an AI research center in the country, which would help in the development of AI technologies and provide resources for further innovation.

In another part of his speech, Minister Gurung discussed the government’s broader economic goals. He mentioned that one of their key objectives is to boost the technology sector’s contribution to the national economy. He explained that the government aims for the IT sector to contribute at least 5% to Nepal’s GDP. This reflects the government’s commitment to promoting technology and innovation as a crucial part of the country’s economic development.
