Almost 15 years after actor Ranbir Kapoor made a casual remark about eating beef, the comment is once again making headlines. The actor, who is now set to play Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s much-awaited film Ramayana, is facing online backlash—this time over his past food preference.
Old comment reignites controversy
In 2011, during the promotions of his film Rockstar, Ranbir had mentioned his love for Peshawari cuisine. He said, “My family is from Peshawar, so a lot of Peshawari food has come with them. I am a mutton, paya, and beef fan. Yeah, I am a big beef fan.”
While the comment didn’t spark much outrage back then, it has recently resurfaced on social media, especially on X (formerly Twitter), where users are questioning the decision to cast him as Lord Ram.
Singer Chinmayi responds strongly
A Twitter user posted a picture of Ranbir as Ram and Sai Pallavi as Sita from the film’s set, saying, “Beef eater will be playing the role of Bhagavan Ram now! What’s wrong with Bollywood?”
Reacting to this, singer Chinmayi Sripaada expressed her disappointment at the criticism. She tweeted, “A babaji who uses the name of God can be a rapist and he can keep getting parole to get votes in bhakt India – however what someone eats is a big problem.”
When another user replied, “How can one bad thing justify another bad thing?” Chinmayi shot back, “Nice. So someone playing a ROLE is the same ‘bad’ as a rapist campaigning for votes amongst you. You deserve to have Ram Rahim as your local MP and visit your house personally.”
Her strong words defended Ranbir and pointed out the double standards in how morality is applied in public discourse.
About the film ramayana
Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, is one of the most ambitious Indian films in production. Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Ram, while Sai Pallavi stars as Sita. The cast also includes Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Ravi Dubey as Lakshman.
The film is being made on a global scale, with an impressive technical team including Oscar-winning composers Hans Zimmer and AR Rahman working on the music. The production design is by experts who worked on Dune and Captain America, giving the mythological epic a visually stunning treatment.
Ramayana will be released in two parts—Part 1 on Diwali 2026 and Part 2 on Diwali 2027. Produced by Namit Malhotra, the film aims to bring the ancient Indian tale of good versus evil to the world stage.
Final thoughts
While the debate over Ranbir Kapoor’s past comment continues, his casting as Lord Ram has sparked a larger conversation about religious sensitivity, public memory, and the evolving expectations from celebrities. Amid all the noise, Chinmayi’s bold support highlights the need to distinguish between personal choices and professional roles.
