Real Madrid returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Sevilla on Sunday night in La Liga. The match at Santiago Bernabéu saw Sevilla reduced to nine players after two red cards, allowing Real Madrid to control the game late on.
Despite being a man down early, Sevilla frustrated Madrid for most of the match. But the breakthrough came in the 75th minute, when La Liga top scorer Kylian Mbappe netted his 29th league goal of the season.
Red cards cost Sevilla early
Sevilla’s problems started in the 12th minute when defender Loïc Badé was shown a straight red card for bringing down Mbappe, who was through on goal. Things got worse just after the break when substitute Isaac Romero received a second yellow just seconds after coming on for a foul on Aurélien Tchouaméni.
Real Madrid took full advantage of the extra space and kept pushing forward in the second half.
Bellingham seals the deal for Real Madrid
In the 87th minute, Jude Bellingham made it 2-0 with a well-placed header from substitute Gonzalo García’s cross. It was the perfect finish for Madrid, whose chances of winning the La Liga title officially ended earlier in the week after Barcelona defeated Espanyol to clinch their 28th title.
Ancelotti’s farewell game at the Bernabéu
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti will lead his team at the Santiago Bernabéu for the final time on May 25 against Real Sociedad. He is expected to take over as Brazil’s head coach shortly after the season ends.
Real Madrid aim for a strong finish
Even though the league title is out of reach, Real Madrid are determined to finish the season on a high. Their recent performance, powered by Mbappe and Bellingham, gave fans something to cheer about.
