A woman accused of trapping a man using a honey trap scheme by inviting him to make a rice cooker has been released on bail.

The Kathmandu District Court ordered the release of 28-year-old Asmita Acharya, originally from Ratnanagar-8, Chitwan, but currently residing in Kuleshwar, Kathmandu-13.

On Monday, Judge Shyambihari Maurya ruled that Acharya could be released on bail of NPR 45,000. Following the order, she paid the amount and was released, according to DSP Hari Khatiwada from Kathmandu District Police.

Acharya was arrested by the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office and made public on February 7 (Magh 24). After further investigation, her case was transferred to the Kathmandu District Police, which later sent its report to the District Government Attorney’s Office. She was then charged under the Criminal Benefits Act in the Kathmandu District Court.

Acharya was accused of luring a man with the surname Alam, who repairs electrical appliances, into her room under the pretense of fixing a rice cooker. According to the police, she repeatedly called him and convinced him to visit her room.

After he arrived, she allegedly threatened to accuse him of sexual assault and report him to the police and his family if he did not pay the demanded amount. Initially, she asked for NPR 1 million, but later, Alam allegedly gave her a check for NPR 300,000.

Following the court’s bail order, she has now been released while the legal process continues.
