Jamuna Rasaili, a 25-year-old woman from Rukum, was living a stable life with her three-year-old son, in-laws, and brother-in-law while her husband worked in India to support the family financially. Although she had received only a basic school education, Jamuna was active on social media and frequently used messaging apps like WhatsApp.
One day, she received a message from an unknown person on WhatsApp, claiming that she had won a huge lottery prize. The scammer convinced her that to claim the winnings, she needed to make an initial payment of three lakh rupees as a processing fee. Tempted by the promise of a big reward, Jamuna believed the fraudster’s words and followed all the instructions given to her.
To gather the required amount, she first approached local lenders but failed to secure the full sum. Desperate, she decided to sell her gold jewelry to make up for the remaining money. Once she transferred the entire amount to the scammer, he immediately blocked her and disappeared, cutting off all communication.
It was only then that Jamuna realized she had been deceived. Overcome with distress and despair, she called her husband in India and tearfully told him that she was going to take her own life. Her husband, shocked and heartbroken, tried to console her and promised that they would recover from the financial loss together. He assured her that he would work hard and repay the money, urging her not to lose hope.
However, Jamuna was unable to cope with the betrayal and financial burden. Tragically, she was later found hanging from a tree near her home.
The police have launched an investigation into the case and are working to trace the scammer behind this devastating fraud. Authorities have once again urged the public to be cautious of online scams that target innocent people, especially through messaging platforms.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of cyber fraud and the importance of raising awareness about digital scams to prevent further tragedies.
