Sanam Teri Kasam Beats Records with ₹45 Crore Re-Release

Indian theatres have witnessed a resurgence of old films being re-released, with some titles enjoying remarkable success. Films like Tumbbad and Laila Majnu, which initially didn’t do well at the box office, have gained a new life with re-releases. Tumbbad earned ₹32 crore in its second run, while Laila Majnu grossed ₹12 crore. Even iconic films like Shah Rukh Khan’s Devdas and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham couldn’t match those figures. However, a surprising contender has now emerged, surpassing all expectations.

‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ Shatters Re-Release Records

The 2016 film Sanam Teri Kasam, which initially struggled at the box office, is now leading the charge. Upon its re-release in 2025, it earned an impressive ₹45 crore. The romantic tragedy, starring Harshvardhan Rane and Pakistani actress Mawra Hocane, had only earned ₹8 crore during its original run but has now become the highest-grossing re-release in Indian cinema. The film opened with a remarkable ₹4.25 crore and continues to perform strongly at the box office.

Sanam Teri Kasam’s Impressive Earnings

According to Sacnilk, the film has earned ₹33 crore in domestic net collections, bringing its total to ₹41.35 crore. Worldwide, it has grossed ₹53 crore, with ₹45 crore coming from its re-release. This massive success has made Sanam Teri Kasam the highest-grossing Indian film upon re-release, overtaking Tumbbad, which previously held the record with ₹32 crore.

How ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ Surpassed Tumbbad

Sanam Teri Kasam has comfortably surpassed the earnings of Tumbbad and taken the crown for the highest-grossing re-release in India. While Ghilli, a Tamil film, was the first to earn ₹30 crore in re-release, Tumbbad broke that record last year with ₹32 crore. However, Sanam Teri Kasam has exceeded both figures, still earning over ₹1 crore in its third week of re-release.

the Film

Directed by Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, Sanam Teri Kasam tells a tragic love story and features Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane in lead roles. Released on February 5, 2016, the film initially didn’t make an impact at the box office but has since achieved an astounding comeback. In an interview, Mawra Hocane humorously attributed the film’s newfound success to “marriage luck,” noting that the only thing that had changed in her life since the film’s original release was her marriage.

With its overwhelming success, Sanam Teri Kasam is proving that sometimes, a film’s time to shine comes much later than expected.
