Police have arrested the wife of Shivashankar Mahato in connection with his murder in Dhanusha.
DSP Santulal Jayaswar of the District Police Office, Mahottari, confirmed that Shivashankar’s wife, Sirjana, has been taken into custody.
“We arrested Srijana yesterday and have started an investigation. Today, we are in the process of extending the remand,” he told The Ritible.
Following the murder of 25-year-old Shivashankar, a resident of Digambarpur in Kshireshwar Nath Municipality-8, Dhanusha, police had suspected his wife and initiated an investigation.
Jayaswar further stated that they have also identified the person who took Shivashankar on a motorcycle.
Shivashankar’s body was found about 100 meters south of the railway track in Sagarnath Vanma, Gaushala Municipality-8, Mahottari. His body was discovered on Friday at around 5:30 PM.
According to the police, the nature of the body suggests that he was killed by slitting his throat with a sharp weapon. The scene also indicated that his body had been dragged some distance after the murder. His identity was confirmed on Sunday, and his body is currently kept at the Provincial Hospital in Jaleshwar for post-mortem.
Police reports state that on Thursday afternoon, Shivashankar had left home with his wife, Sirjana, and their 10-month-old son, heading toward his in-laws’ house in Pashupatinagar Bandra, Bardibas Municipality-5. However, police have not yet disclosed whether he actually reached his in-laws’ house or not.
The investigation is focusing on possible personal enmity as a motive for the murder. Additionally, Shivashankar had returned to Dhanusha from Mumbai only about one and a half months ago. Police are also probing whether he was involved in a romantic relationship that may have led to his murder.
According to Shivashankar’s brother, Ram Mahato, Shivashankar, Sirjana, and their baby had traveled on a motorcycle up to Mahendranagar. From there, Sirjana had called for two motorcycles from her maternal home. She and the baby rode on one motorcycle, while Shivashankar rode on the other, Ram stated.
Jayaswar confirmed that the identity of the person who took Shivashankar on the motorcycle has been established.
Shivashankar’s family also revealed that there had been a dispute at his in-laws’ house a few days earlier, during which he was assaulted. After the argument, when Sirjana and the baby returned home, Shivashankar was reluctant to visit his in-laws again. However, Ram claimed that Sirjana forced him to go by telling him that her grandfather had passed away.
