Snapchat has unveiled its first-ever generative AI Video Lenses, marking a significant step in integrating AI into its popular augmented reality (AR) features. These new Lenses are powered by Snap’s proprietary generative video model and are currently available exclusively to Snapchat Platinum subscribers, a premium tier that costs $15.99 per month.
Snapchat has long been a pioneer in AR, but with AI technology rapidly evolving, the company is investing heavily to stay ahead of competitors like Instagram and TikTok. These AI Video Lenses are designed to provide users with immersive and dynamic effects that are not yet available on rival platforms.
At launch, Snapchat is introducing three AI-powered Video Lenses:
- “Raccoon” and “Fox” – These Lenses bring animated furry creatures to life, cuddling up with the user in the video.
- “Spring Flowers” – This effect generates a cinematic zoom-out, revealing the user holding a bouquet of flowers.
Users can access these AI Video Lenses directly from the Lens carousel. Once selected, they can capture Snaps using either the front or back camera, with the AI-generated video automatically saving to their Memories.
Snapchat has confirmed that it will continue to expand its AI Lens collection, adding new options every week. In a blog post, the company highlighted its commitment to pushing technological boundaries:
“These Lenses, powered by our in-house built generative video model, bring some of the most cutting-edge AI tools available today to Snapchatters through a familiar Lens format.”
This move aligns with Snapchat’s broader strategy of developing its own AI models, rather than relying solely on external AI providers like OpenAI and Google. Last month, Snap announced an AI text-to-image model for mobile devices, which will soon enhance various Snapchat features while also reducing operational costs.
By integrating generative AI into Lenses, Snapchat is further cementing its position as a leader in both AR and AI-powered creativity, offering its users an exclusive and engaging way to enhance their Snaps.
