Actor and producer Soubin Shahir appeared before the police in Kochi on Tuesday in connection with a financial fraud case linked to the blockbuster Malayalam film Manjummel Boys. The actor said he was not arrested but only questioned as per court orders.
Speaking to reporters after the session at Maradu police station, Soubin clarified, “I have submitted all the required documents and my mobile phone. I believe the investigators are convinced by the facts now.”
Soubin, his father Babu Shahir, and co-producer Shawn Anthony were earlier reported to have been arrested and released on bail. However, Soubin denied the reports, stating that the Kerala High Court had granted him anticipatory bail, which meant his arrest would not be officially recorded.
Fraud Complaint Over Profit Promise
The case was filed by Siraj Valiyathura, who claimed the producers had promised a 40% profit share over his ₹7 crore investment in the film. The police report, submitted to the High Court, accuses the team of conspiracy to defraud the investor.
While rejecting the producers’ request to quash the case, the court directed that the accused must cooperate with the investigation and appear for questioning but should not be taken into custody unless absolutely necessary.
Manjummel Boys Box Office Performance
Directed by Chidambaram, Manjummel Boys stars Soubin Shahir and has been a massive success. According to Sacnilk, the film earned ₹240.5 crore worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2024 and the second biggest ever, after L2: Empuraan.
The investigation continues as police examine the documents submitted and await further court directions.
