Teachers and police clashed at New Baneshwor during a protest. The clash happened when police tried to stop the teachers who had gathered and were protesting on the Bijulibazar–New Baneshwor road section.
Police tried to block the teachers when they attempted to enter a restricted area, which led to rising tensions. Protesters threw stones at the police during the clash.
The situation in the Baneshwor area is currently tense. Police used water cannons to disperse the crowd.
Teacher Purna Blon, who witnessed the incident, said that outsiders had entered the protest. “We were protesting peacefully for our demands. A group tried to break the police line, and that caused the clash. Then the police used water cannons,” he said, adding that some teachers were injured during the scuffle.
Teachers have been protesting in Kathmandu since Chaitra 20 (April 2), demanding that the government pass a Teacher and Employee-Friendly Act. They also announced a nationwide educational strike starting from Chaitra 25 (April 7).
Despite several rounds of talks, no agreement has been reached between the teachers and the government.
Because of the ongoing protest, school admissions for the new academic session, checking of SEE exam papers, and the Grade 12 annual exams have been affected. The Grade 12 exams, originally scheduled for Baisakh 11 (April 23), have been postponed until Baisakh 21 (May 3).
