Former Brazil national team coach Tite announced on Tuesday that he is taking a break from football for an indefinite period to focus on his mental and physical health. The 63-year-old made the decision after experiencing signs of stress, including a reported anxiety attack before a scheduled trip from Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo.
Talks with Corinthians come to a halt
He was in advanced talks to rejoin Corinthians, a club he famously led to major victories including the 2012 Copa Libertadores and FIFA Club World Cup. However, he confirmed that those negotiations are now paused due to his decision to prioritize self-care.
“There was an ongoing conversation with Corinthians, but it will have to be halted due to a difficult but necessary decision,” Tite shared.
Recognizing vulnerability and choosing health
Having led Brazil from 2016 to 2022, Tite said he reached the decision after discussing with his family and recognizing physical and emotional warning signs.
“I have to understand that, as a human being, I can be vulnerable. Admitting to that will certainly make me stronger,” he said. “I love what I do and I will continue to, but right now, I need to take care of myself.”
Recent coaching journey of Tite
Tite was last seen on the sidelines as coach of Flamengo but was dismissed on September 30—less than a year after joining the club. He has remained without a job since.
Corinthians, who recently let go of coach Ramón Diáz, confirmed they were “very close to a deal” with Tite and had planned for him to sign the contract and take over training on Tuesday.
For now, however, football will have to wait as Tite focuses on his health and recovery.
