Vandana Katariya, India’s most-capped female hockey player, has decided to retire from international hockey after an incredible 15-year journey. The 32-year-old striker, who played 320 matches and scored 158 goals, called it a “bittersweet and empowering” moment as she chose to step away at her peak.

Taking to Instagram, Vandana shared her emotions, saying, “I’m not leaving because I’ve lost my passion, but because I want to retire at my best. This is my choice, my moment, and I walk away with my head held high.”

A Legacy That Inspired Millions

Since making her debut in 2009, Vandana has been a force in Indian hockey. She made history at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by becoming the first Indian woman to score a hat-trick in the Games. Her contributions played a key role in India’s historic fourth-place finish at the event.

“Thinking about Tokyo still gives me goosebumps. That hat-trick against South Africa was more than just goals; it was proof that India belonged on the world stage,” she recalled.

Retirement But Not Goodbye!

Although she is stepping away from international hockey, Vandana assured fans that she isn’t done with the sport. She will continue playing in the Hockey India League, promising to keep scoring and inspiring young players.

“The turf will still feel my footsteps. My love for this game will never fade,” she said.

Tributes Pour In for the Hockey Queen

Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey praised Vandana’s contribution, calling her the “heartbeat of India’s attack.” He credited her for leading India through high-pressure moments and setting new benchmarks for future generations.

Vandana’s incredible journey earned her prestigious awards like the Padma Shri and Arjuna Award. She helped India win multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals in international tournaments, including the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and the FIH Nations Cup.

A Special Tribute to Her Father

In an emotional moment, Vandana dedicated her journey to her late father, who was her biggest inspiration.

“Without you, this dream would have never been possible. Your sacrifices and love have been my strength,” she wrote.

Her final match for India was during the FIH Pro League in February, marking the end of an era in Indian hockey.

A Legend Who Will Keep Inspiring

Vandana Katariya may have retired from international hockey, but her legacy will live on. Her journey from Roshnabad, Haridwar, to becoming one of India’s greatest hockey players will continue to inspire generations.

Her stick may rest on the international stage, but her passion will keep the game alive!
