Telangana police have filed an FIR against actor Vijay Deverakonda and 24 other celebrities, including Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, and Lakshmi Manju, for allegedly promoting illegal betting apps. The case was registered at Miyapur police station in Hyderabad following a complaint by Phanindra Sarma, a 32-year-old businessman.
In response to the FIR, Vijay Deverakonda’s team has released an official statement clarifying his stance. The statement emphasizes that his endorsement was strictly for skill-based gaming platforms and was limited to regions where such activities are legally permitted.
Clarifying His Stand
The statement reads:
“Mr. Vijay Deverakonda had officially entered into a contract as a brand ambassador for a company offering skill-based games. His endorsement was strictly within the boundaries of regions where online skill-based gaming is legally allowed.”
It further explains that games like online rummy have been recognized by the Supreme Court of India as skill-based rather than chance-based, distinguishing them from gambling. The statement highlights that all legal aspects were carefully reviewed before the actor agreed to endorse the gaming platform A23.
No Longer Associated with the Brand
Deverakonda’s team also made it clear that his association with the platform ended in 2023.
“His endorsement term concluded in 2023, and he is no longer affiliated with the brand. This clarification aims to prevent any misconceptions and to reaffirm that Mr. Vijay Deverakonda’s past endorsement adhered strictly to legal guidelines.”
The case involves 25 well-known personalities, raising concerns about the influence of celebrities in promoting gaming apps. However, with his official statement, Deverakonda has sought to put an end to any misunderstandings regarding his involvement.
