The filmmaker suffered a cardiac arrest while traveling by bus from Madurai to Chennai. Reports say he experienced severe chest pain during the trip. Despite quick medical help after being rushed to a nearby hospital, doctors were unable to save him.

Vikram Sugumaran began his career as an assistant to the legendary director Balu Mahendra. He gained recognition with Madha Yaanai Koottam (2013), a gritty rural drama praised for its realistic storytelling and social themes. His recent film, Raavana Kottam (2023), starred Shanthnu Bhagyaraj.
He was also a co-writer on the acclaimed film Aadukalam (2011), directed by Vetrimaaran and starring Dhanush. At the time of his death, Vikram was working on a new project titled Therum Porum.
