West Indies to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of First Cricket World Cup Win

West Indies will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their first Cricket World Cup victory in 1975. The final was held at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, where West Indies defeated Australia by 17 runs. This tournament was known as the ‘Prudential World Cup’ at the time. Captain Clive Lloyd played a crucial role, scoring a century in the final to lead his team to victory.

Official Announcement Coming Soon

Cricket West Indies CEO, Chris Dehring, has stated that an official announcement will be made soon regarding the celebration. The event is expected to take place in Barbados around June 25, coinciding with the start of a Test match against Australia.

Cricket Legends Support the Celebration

Former cricket legend Michael Holding has welcomed the plan. The 71-year-old stated, “Everyone celebrates their achievements with pride. We must also remember our history and honor our successes.”

Special Event in Barbados

Cricket West Indies Chairman, Dr. Kishore Shallow, shared details about the event. He said, “We are preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our first World Cup win in a special way. Twelve members of the 1975 team are still alive, and we will honor them in Barbados.”

The historic team still has 12 surviving players:

  • Alvin Kallicharran (76 years)
  • Rohan Kanhai (89 years)
  • Clive Lloyd (80 years)
  • Viv Richards (73 years)
  • Bernard Julien (75 years)
  • Deryck Murray (81 years)
  • Vanburn Holder (79 years)
  • Andy Roberts (74 years)
  • Collis King (73 years)
  • Lance Gibbs (90 years)
  • Maurice Foster (81 years)

Two members of the team, Roy Fredericks and Keith Boyce, have passed away in 2000 and 1996, respectively.

The celebration will be a historic event, recognizing the legendary players who brought glory to West Indies cricket.
