WhatsApp has started rolling out a new translation feature for some Android users who are part of its beta program. This feature, in development since last year, lets users translate both chat messages and channel updates directly inside the app.
Available in WhatsApp Beta Version 2.25.12.25
According to WABetaInfo, users with the 2.25.12.25 beta version of WhatsApp for Android can now try this feature. The update is currently available to a limited number of users, but more beta testers are expected to get access in the coming weeks.
Supports Multiple Languages with Offline Translation
This new feature supports translation of Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Hindi, and Russian. It works offline, meaning you don’t need an internet connection to translate messages. However, users must download the language pack they want to use. There’s also an option to download a pack that automatically detects and translates incoming messages.
How to Enable the Translation Option in Chats
To turn on the translation, users can go to the chat info screen and choose the language they want messages to be translated from. This can be set individually for each private or group chat. Users who prefer not to use automatic translation can still manually translate messages by tapping the “Translate” option from the message menu.
Translations Are Done On Your Device, Not in the Cloud
Unlike cloud-based translation tools, WhatsApp’s feature works on your device using lightweight language packs. While this means translations may not be as perfect as Google Translate, WhatsApp allows users to send feedback to improve translations. Importantly, this feedback does not share any original or translated messages with Meta.
Try It Now If You’re a Beta User
If you’re using WhatsApp’s Android beta version and received the translation feature, give it a try. Let others know how well it works and if it helps with communicating in different languages.
