63 Modified Motorcycles Seized in Chitwan for Noise Pollution

In various parts of the district, 63 motorcycles that had undergone modifications and produced excessive noise at high speeds, causing sound pollution, have been taken under control.

The District Traffic Police Office, Chitwan, confiscated these motorcycles at different times and has initiated the process of legal action against them.

According to the office chief, Police Inspector Gayatri Raj Sharma, the motorcycles were seized while they were being operated with modifications that created loud noise.

He stated that despite action being taken against modified motorcycles at different times, noise pollution had not decreased. As a result, motorcycles that had undergone modifications, including silencers, handlebars, and seats, differing from their original factory specifications or vehicle registration records, and emitted loud noises were brought under control. He informed that 30 such motorcycles were seized just on Sunday.

While a noise level of up to 60 decibels is generally considered normal, these motorcycles were found to produce noise ranging from 120 to 190 decibels. Sharma explained that this level of noise adversely affects human health, causing issues such as increased blood pressure, fatigue, irritability, sudden anger, hearing impairment, and other problems. Considering these impacts, such motorcycles were taken into custody.

Sharma further explained that those involved in such activities would face penalties under Section 39 of the Motor Vehicles and Transport Management Act, 2049, which stipulates fines ranging from NPR 1,000 to NPR 5,000, and under Section 43 of the Bagmati Province Motor Vehicles and Transport Management Act, 2075, which mandates fines between NPR 7,000 and NPR 15,000. The motorcycles will only be released after being restored to their original condition and paying the required fines, he added.
