Filmmaker James Cameron says the duration of his upcoming movie Avatar 3 , will be more than the previous installment which exceeded 3 hours.
The Avatar series is more than just a set of movies—it’s a global phenomenon. After the massive success of Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022, fans are eagerly awaiting the next chapter. Now, director James Cameron has shared exciting new details about Avatar 3: Fire and Ash, set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025.
Why Avatar 3 Was Born
James Cameron originally planned for only three Avatar movies, but the story turned out to be too big for just one sequel. In a recent interview, he revealed that while working on The Way of Water, the team had too many ideas for just one movie.
“We had so many great ideas packed into act one of The Way of Water,” Cameron said. “The movie was moving too fast, and we weren’t diving deep enough into the characters. So I said, ‘Guys, we’ve got to split it.’”
This decision led to the creation of Avatar 3, which will be even longer than The Way of Water.
Characters Inspired by Real Life
Cameron also shared that many of the characters in Avatar are inspired by his own life. “These characters come from us—our childhoods, our experiences as parents, and even our mistakes,” he said.
For example, Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington) is a tough father, which Cameron says reflects his own parenting style. Co-writer Rick Jaffa also brought personal experiences into the script, especially with Lo’ak (Britain Dalton). “A childhood friend of mine watched The Way of Water and said Lo’ak’s relationship with Neteyam reminded her of me and my older brother,” Jaffa shared.
Just like Jake Sully says in the movie, “This family is our fortress.”
