Bob Cowper, the first man to score a triple century in Test cricket on Australian soil, has died aged 84 due to an undisclosed illness, Cricket Australia announced on Sunday.
Who Was Bob Cowper?
Cowper was a left-handed Australian batsman known for his exceptional technique and composure at the crease. He played 27 Test matches between 1964 and 1968, amassing 2,061 runs at an average of 46.84. His contributions included five centuries and 36 wickets with his part-time off-spin bowling.
The Historic Triple Century
Bob Cowper’s most iconic moment came in February 1966, when he scored a marathon 307 off 589 balls over 12 hours at the Melbourne Cricket Ground against England. This innings was the first Test triple century scored in Australia and the only one in the 20th century on home soil.
The remarkable feat was even more special because Cowper had just returned to the team after being left out of the previous Test. His knock was not only memorable for its endurance but also its stroke-play, securing his place in cricket history.
Bob Cowper’s Career Beyond Batting
Although best known for his batting, Cowper was also a handy off-spin bowler and took 36 Test wickets. His performances on Australian pitches were particularly dominant, with an extraordinary batting average of 75.78 at home — second only to Don Bradman.
After retiring in 1968, Cowper transitioned into a successful career as a stockbroker. He remained connected to the sport as an ICC match referee and continued to be a respected voice in cricketing circles.
Recognized for His Contribution to Cricket
In 2023, Bob Cowper was honored with the Medal of the Order of Australia for his services to cricket. His legacy includes not only his stats and records but also his impact on the Victorian and national teams during a golden era for Australian cricket.
Tributes From Cricket Australia
“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bob Cowper who was a hugely respected figure in Australian cricket,” said Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird. “Bob was a wonderful batter who will always be remembered for his famous triple century at the MCG.”
Bob Cowper is survived by his wife Dale and daughters Olivia and Sera. His contributions to cricket will be remembered for generations.
