Biswo Paudel officially assumed his role as the Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank on May 21 (7th Jestha) in Kathmandu. Just after taking charge, he signed his first major decision—to print new NPR 500 and NPR 1,000 notes.
Speaking to the media, Paudel clarified that monetary policy and fiscal policy are separate. “Monetary policy is not just a supporting tool for the government’s fiscal plan—it’s an independent strategy. But if there’s any conflict, we’ll make necessary adjustments,” he said.
When asked about the resignation of Executive Director Gunakar Bhatt, who was also in the running for the governor post, Paudel simply called it an internal matter and avoided further comments.
With a strong start, Governor Paudel has signaled that he values independence, transparency, and modernization in the banking system.
